I love the GPS on my phone. I know I can get anywhere, even if I’ve never been there before. Wouldn’t that satellite perspective be great for life as well—something that allowed us to look at ourselves from a different perspective and know exactly where we are in life and how far we need to go to be the person we want to be? There is such a tool, but for many it can be difficult to find and even more difficult to use. For us to continue this battle of breaking free we need to learn what it is and how to harness the power it can bring us. The tool is self-awareness.
Having self-awareness is having a correct view of who you are. It is what is true about yourself. Self-awareness is the first step for all growth and development.
One of the first places we can look for self-awareness is in the mirror. The reflection of a mirror is something we take for granted today. If you’re not too lazy or too cool go look in the mirror. If not now, do it the next time you’re in a space with a mirror. Look at your reflection.
- What do you see?
- Do you know who are you?
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What type of personality do you have?
- Are you a rule follower or a free spirit?
- A lover or a fighter?
- Do you like who you are?
I’m not just talking about your appearance.
- What do you feel when you look at yourself?
- Do you feel shame?
- Are you proud of yourself or disappointed?
- Is it hard for you to look at yourself intently?
- Are you able to be honest with yourself?
Looking at your reflection is a powerful thing. It gives you the chance to crawl out of your skin and consider the person before you in an objective way..
But our reflection is only part of the picture. Self-awareness can be like trying to look at a framed picture from inside the frame. There is only so much we will be able to see about ourselves before blindspots in our growth for freedom become evident. We need an outside-the-frame perspective, a satellite perspective, to be able to see the whole picture. That is where the next part of self-awareness comes in.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.
And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.
In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.
2 Corinthians 4:4
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
