Vasai woman threatens to immolate self over house demolition
MUMBAI: A Vasai based woman on Thursday threatened to immolate herself in the ward office after the municipality demolished the compound gate of her bungalow without giving her any show cause notice.
Sheetal Fernandes came to the ward office in Vasaigaon armed with a plastic bottle filled with kerosene.
She alleged that the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation(VVMC) demolition squad pulled down the iron gate and cement pillars of her compound wall on July 15 without giving her any notice.
Fernandes alleged that she was caught unaware when the demolition squad came to her ‘Win House’ bungalow at Mularwadi village in Vasai (west).
They used a JCB machine to pull down the gate. When she tried to intervene she was prevented from interfering in the demolition work.
On Thursday after her attempts to know why her compound gate was demolished, failed, she reached the ward office with the kerosene.
She alleged that the demolition was carried out at the behest of local goons. She said that only her gate was pulled down while all other bungalows in the vicinity had their gates and compound walls intact. She said there was nothing illegal about her compound gate.
Fernandes who lives with her son said that with the gate missing she fears for her life.
Even as she picked up the kerosene bottle to pour on her body, civic staffers took away the bottle from her.
Civic officials assured to look into her issue.
