Giridih, June 28: A Muslim dairy owner, Usman Ansari, was brutally beaten up and his house was set on fire by a mob in a village in Giridih district of Jharkhand after a headless carcass of a cow was found near his home. As per the latest reports, the victim has been admitted to hospital and his family has been moved to a safer location under police protection.

The incident was reported from Bariabad village in Giridih on Tuesday. According to Hindustan Times, the police had to resort to lathi-charge and air firing to control the frenzied crowd from attacking the 55-year-old and his family. The report quotes Giridih superintendent of police Akhilesh B Variar as saying that around 25 people have been detained.

On Tuesday afternoon, villagers in Bariabad found a carcass, believed to be that of a cow, with its head missing and assumed that the cattle has been slaughtered by Ansari. Soon after, a mob carrying sticks and stones descended on Ansari’s house and thrashed him. The crowd has set his house on fire till the police reached the spot.

Reportedly, it took more than two hours for the police to bring the situation under control, Giridih deputy commissioner Uma Shankar Singh said.

The incident comes couple of days after cow protectors killed a Muslim youth on board a train in Haryana. The crowd allegedly called him and his two brothers, who were injured, as beef-eaters.
