Clarice Vaz, a nurse by profession but now a self trained contemporary abstract Artist by calling. She reside in Saligao, North Goa, India.

She gave up her profession… practicing only part time in her village to give full attention to her two young sons.

She took up Art, her childhood hobby, to ease the “empty nest syndrome”. It was only in 2011, after the sudden demise of her  elder son Craig Vaz to an undiagnosed heart ailment, that she started creating Art seriously on a full time basis using his name as my Artist pen name in his memory.

Clarice Vaz

Suffering is justified as soon as it becomes the raw material of beauty
~ Jean-Paul Sartre

He is the very reason Clarice jumps out of bed each morning to paint the day with the bright colours of creativity. His tragic death literally pushed her  further into this beautiful place of intuition and inspiration…allowing her to be an artist now as if it were her destiny!

Painting brought wholeness and healing that incorporated her loss. The thrill of discovering the many miracles that begin to unfold in the unusual and off beat techniques she employs in her work, gives her so much of satisfaction and peace.

Her life has now become a life of MEANING focusing on serving and giving. The joy of giving doubles her happiness. She has therefore adopted his name as her artist pen name as she signs each painting as CRAIG VAZ.

“This is my way of remembering and celebrating the life of a beautiful human being that lived with us.”

Some of her current works are on display at Damian de Goa showroom in Porvorim, Goa.

In less than two years she had two SOLO exhibitions and has also participated in group exhibitions in some well established Galleries in Goa. Her work has also featured in private collections of several individuals in Goa and abroad getting sold from my studio in Saligao, mainly to NRI clients.

She hardly use a paint brush but uses techniques of Fluid and Spin painting..

Painting with forks hairbrush..and more.

She is unique in painting with a syringe…. for being a nurse, she feels more comfortable with using a syringe than a paint brush.

Her  works border on intuition, imagination and self expression. She believes  that the Universe is the outcome of intelligent placing and that all things are connected in a cosmic web. The interaction between the parts of a whole are more important than the parts themselves. And that is the reason why she  likes  to do formless Fluid or spin painting! There is no object to move. It’s like a dance without dancers. She is DRAWN to this one subject of ONENESS.

She loves  to experiment with colours, textures, gels and mediums, getting her hands dirty! She paints with nontraditional tools…She  never follows any Art Rules for she believes  that Art can emerge from almost anything. Beyond rules there is no authority. You always get to be original. Ambiguity is important as each Art work can have a different meaning. Each piece of fluid or spin painting has movement texture emotion and light.

When she  starts to paint .. She is  STILL. She visualize colours dancing on canvas and I am filled with a creative energy to create and then just wait for the painting to emerge from the chaotic fluid flow..It’s like waiting for that one beautiful motion blend of colours that is synchronized with my head and heart. In the end it feels like she has  given birth to an Artwork.

She also likes to transfer Goa’s serene vibrant and inspiring landscapes into an abstract mosaic of colours and textures.

Landscapes can be very poetic and she prefers to capture these using her  own unique style of SYRINGE PAINTING. It gives the Artwork an interesting effect. It’s a blend of impressionism and expressionism which has become very popular amongst her  NRI clients. She  has found a way to live her true life’s journey in a REAL way every single day. She  has embarked on her  present activity as a means of diversion for her  personal sorrow and I believe that Art and in fact Colours can be very therapeutic.
