Kannur: They say, any publicity is good publicity. Well, may not be always. In a tragic incident, a talented young girl from Maloor village in Kannur who scored 1180 marks out of 1200 in her higher secondary school examination ended her life.
The reason known as of now is the publicity that she garnered because of her accomplishment.
Rafseena of Sivapuram Higher Secondary School was found hanging in her house on Wednesday. Her results were announced on Monday and as per sources, Rafseena, whose family is fighting acute poverty, had never spoken about her financial condition to her classmates. But, the media reports mainly highlighted her economic condition. Insulted by the same, the young girl killed herself as she could not bear the humiliation she was subjected to.
Police say that Rafseena has left behind a suicide note hinting at the fact that she was depressed by the reports of her poor background which she had hidden from her classmates.
Rafseena was living in a single-room house at Maloor Nittaramb Laksham Veedu colony along with her mother Rahmath, a daily wage labourer. Her siblings-elder sister Manzina is studying in Thiruvananthapuram and brother Maharoof is working in Bangalore.
Rafseena had scored 96 per cent marks in Plus-One. After reading her story from newspapers, many individuals, including Kannur MP P.K. Sreemathy, and voluntary organisations had offered sponsorship for her further studies.
The Peravoor police registered a case and started investigations.
Rafseena’s body was buried after inquest on Thursday.
